In early August 2011, I found out I was pregnant with our first baby! We were thrilled to find out the news and tell our families. The Babelet is due April 7, 2012 which also happens to be my mom's birthday!
I waited a week to tell my parents because they would be coming to visit and I thought it would be fun to tell them in person... so the ideas of how to tell them started churning.
We ended up filling the backseat of our car with pink and blue balloons and driving to the airport. We had the balloons tied to the door handles so when they opened the doors the balloons came out.
My parents' flight was delayed and they ended up landing after midnight from a 6 hour flight. They were exhausted and the time difference didn't help.
My mom saw the balloons when we pulled up and her first thought was "who's having a party?" then she saw they were pink and blue (still before we opened the door or stopped the car) and she started screaming and crying. She was so excited. My dad was confused but then he too was excited.
We told my sister 2 days later when we picked her up in Seattle. When she went to get in the car we had one pink and one blue balloon on her seat. She sarcastically said "hey, there's balloons in my seat" not realizing what was going on. Within seconds she noticed they were pink and blue and she started hyperventilating and couldn't catch her breath. It was so funny, she was so happy and started crying and just kept saying my name over and over again.
Later that day we called my brother and let him in on the family secret.
We tried to get in touch with Dave's parents a bunch of times that week but never could get in touch with them so we waited about another week to let them know.
For our local friends, we started telling around 8w. We waited until our 12w ultrasound to tell families back east, work and others.
